California Pitcher Plant

California Pitcher Plant

Caption:

Carniverous California Pitcher Plant traps insects inside its hollow leaves. Darlingtonia californica.

Photographer's comment:

I find carniverous plants fascinating. It's hard to imagine plants that consume insects for their nourishment. These leaves rise about 18 inches above the mucky fen in which the plants grow. I made this image from the boardwalk at the Darlingtonia Botanical Wayside just off US 101 north of Florence, Oregon.
