Cascade Oregon GrapeOregon Grapes get their name because of the resemblance of their fruit to wild grapes. They're edible, but a bit on the tart side. There are three species of Oregon Grape in Washington and Oregon. This one, Berberis nervosa, is the mid-size plant. Shining Oregon Grape is taller, with glossy leaves. Trailing Oregon Grape is short, with dull leaves. Some botanists put all of these in the genus Mahonia, as do most gardeners. This photograph was made at Beacon Rock State Park on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge. |
