Moss-covered Bigleaf Maple

Mosses on Bigleaf Maple

This Bigleaf Maple, Acer macrophyllum, in the Olympic National Park Hoh Rainforest Hall of the Mosses is typical of the trees found there. In this very wet environment whole communities of mosses grow on the trunks and branches of the maples.

The mosses include Oregon Selaginella, Selaginella oregana, Stair Step Moss, Hylocomium splendens, and Menzies Tree Moss, Leucolepis acanthoneuron.
