Old-growth Douglas Fir & Western Hemlock

Old-growth Douglas Fir
& Western Hemlock

Douglas Fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, often grows in association with Western Hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla, in low-elevation forests. Western Red Cedar, Thuja plicata, is the third major species found in this forest association, although not seen in this photograph along the Elwha River in Olympic National Park. The shrubby understory tree is Vine Maple, Acer circinatum.
