Ancient Bristlecone Pine Ancient Bristlecone Pine

Bristlecone Pines, Pinus longaeva, develop their twisted form in the harsh environment where they live -- here at about 11,000 feet in the Patriarch Grove of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Inyo National Forest, California. Little else grows here, so the pines survive with little competition for the scarce water and nutrients on this rocky ridgetop site.
