Shoe TreeJust west of the Nevada border on US 395, near Hallelujah Junction, California stands a solitary Utah Juniper, Juniperus osteosperma, in a roadside pullout. Over the years people have tossed shoes into this tree, creating a "shoe tree." It caught my eye on the way south when the light was dull, so I stopped to make this photograph whlie driving back north.
